Holmdel Theatre Company
Mission
The mission of the HTC is to provide artistic/theatrical
opportunities for students, alumni and community residents to
perform and create in a professional environment. Each season the
Holmdel Theatre Company strives to improve artistic standards,
quality and arts education by hiring professional artistic and
technical personnel in efforts to cultivate and encourage the growth
of the artistic community, educate performers, and to provide high
quality theater productions to the community. The HTC seeks to
integrate professional actors, technicians, designers and directors
with non-professionals and young people in a synergistic artistic
and educational exchange. In addition, the artistic philosophy of
the HTC is based on the commitment to presenting classical plays as
well as rarely presented drama and comedy. The HTC is one of the
only, if not the only non-professional theater company in the area
that is committed to presenting classical plays and little known
works. This commitment brings something different to the region in
terms of variety and artistic opportunity. The HTC may be the only
theater in the area that gives the non-professional actor, designer
and technician the opportunity to perform in the works of Stoppard,
Shaw, Shakespeare and Arthur Miller on a regular basis.
Since 1985 the HTC has served the community with a diverse selection
of theatrical productions. After incorporating in 1987 the HTC has
presented two to three productions per season in addition to
workshops, coffeehouses, theater arts instruction, new play readings
and art shows. The original membership of the HTC sought to create
an educational and alternative theater experience for community
residents. The diversity of the productions, which goes from
Sartre's No Exit, Eric Overmyer's On The Verge, Eugene
Ionesco's "The Lesson", Shaw's Arms and the Man, Ibsen's
Peer Gynt and Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, Two
Gentlemen of Verona, and As You Like It to Lies and
Legends: The Harry Chapin Musical, The Miracle Worker,
Craig Lucas' Reckless and Godspell has provided a
tremendous experience for the performers, technicians and audiences
alike. The HTC has grown from 1985 to 1997 and has continued to
broaden the base of interest and support by pursuing eclectic
production choices, as well as integrating more and more
professional artists into an originally non-professional group. This
commitment has proven to be beneficial to the constituency on a
multitude of levels and has become the focus of our growth in the
pursuit of artistic excellence. The benefit of this extends from a
commitment to theater education and vocational training of young
performers to the encouragement and employment of New Jersey artists
to the contribution of eclectic and diverse theater productions to
New Jersey audiences.
